The one thing pilots never do when flying as passengers

They’re usually the person in charge of the safety of hundreds of people, so what happens when pilots switch position and become a passenger themselves?

With the holiday season upon us, one industry insider has revealed there’s one major things pilots never do when taking to the skies as civilians.

In fact, it’s not just pilots, but many people who work within the airline industry.

“When you're cabin crew or a pilot you never switch off when you're on board an aircraft as a passenger,” cabin crew member Dan Air told MailOnline Travel.

Claiming the extensive training and time spent on planes conditions them to be in a high state of alertness, Dan explains that he never completely relaxes whenever he’s flying.

“It's just impossible to do,” he told the publication.

“Every call bell that chimes, every 'bing-bong' of a phone call between the crew or the flight deck you find yourself looking up.”

That's good news for us, with more eyes, ears and noses on the alert for anything that might signal a problem.

"Smells... travel around quite freely, and some (e.g fuel, hydraulic fluid, superheated bleed air) are pretty distinctive,” retired pilot Tom Farrier explains on Quora.
