Is This the Wildest Destination Marathon of All Time?

I’ve run some pretty cool races in my day. I once did a half-marathon in Vegas where couples could get married at mile three - Elvis optional. I’ve ran through various wine countries and once on the runway of JFK airport in New York City with planes taking off all around me. It was legal, I promise.

But I recently learned about a marathon that truly takes the cake when it comes to pushing the envelope on the “destination race.”

The 17th annual Safaricom Marathon and Half Marathon takes place in June of 2016 and has runners racing through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya -one of Africa’s most incredible wildlife conservancies - right next to all of the park’s animal residents. Lewa is home to over 100 rhinos, elephant, zebra, giraffe, and buffalo.

California-based Aardvark Safaris has partnered with conservation charity Tusk to be the official U.S. tour operator for the race and can do just about anything to make finishing it possible for folks at a variety of ability levels.

The course is overseen by a team of armed rangers, helicopters and a plane to ensure the safety of the runners.

Most of the course, covering the wide-open African plains, includes an awesome view of Mt. Kenya.

Funds raised by the marathon go directly to Tusk conservation and community projects in Africa. There’s no wedding chapel at mile three, but you might just get the chance to race an elephant to the finish line.
