Iceland Air Is Giving Out Free Friends

Ads for Iceland Air boast have long boasted that while other airlines give you miles, this airline gives you time - a nod to its policy of free seven-day layovers in Iceland when you fly across the Atlantic. Now Iceland Air is adding something else to its list of free perks: friends.

Until April 30, passengers flying on Iceland Air can reserve a “Stopover Buddy,” and that’s not any sort of double entendre. The wholesome program connects each visitor with an airline employee who will take them on an adventure in the country, like a local tour guide.

The video announcing the campaign starts with the announcement, “Travel in Iceland with a Stopover Buddy,” before showing uniformed employees ice-skating, fishing, biking, spelunking, hiking, and sledding across the snow-covered country.

Stopover Buddy Adventures come in all kinds, from family-friendly sledding days to food tours, and in a series of videos on the airline’s YouTube channel, each Buddy pitches themselves and the day they’d plan with a visitor.

Each buddy’s offering is based on their own interests, so if you want to try out mountaineering, you can, for example, get paired up with cabin crew member Unnur Eir who really goes mountain climbing in her spare time; if you like heli-skiing you can choose pilot Björn Ingi Haflidason, who is an accomplished skiier. You can even request the airline’s CEO Birkir Hólm Guðnason as your local guide.

Even if you’re not planning a stopover in Iceland this winter, the video series is worth watching. It’s both strangely amusing (the minute-long clips are kind of like online dating profiles) and really smart - the snippets of employees’ lives highlight tons of fun Icelandic activities through the eyes of the people best equipped to show it off, those who live there.

Does this campaign make you want to travel to Iceland?
