Acadia National Park is a 47,000-acre Atlantic coast recreation area primarily on Maine's Mount Desert Island. Its landscape is marked by woodland, rocky beaches and glacier-scoured granite peaks such as Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the United States’ East Coast.
Baxter State Park is a large wilderness area located in Piscataquis County in north-central Maine, United States. This is the North Maine Woods region and has a diverse population of wildlife, the most common of which are the moose, the black bear, and the white-tailed deer.
The historic town of Rumford was first settled in 1774. Rumford is a beautiful area filled with trees, streams and mountains. The Androscoggin River flows through the town and features a series of spectacular waterfalls. Together they have a total drop of 176 feet making it the highest drop east of the Niagara Falls.
Aroostook, named from a Native American word meaning “Beautiful River” is nicknamed the “The Crown of Maine” partly because of its geographic location but more because of the beautiful landscapes you’ll encounter here.
Covering an area of three square miles, the James L. Goodwin State Forest offers access to the great outdoors every season of the year, but it’s particularly pretty in Autumn. It has an extensive variety of trails, including an equestrian trail and the miles-long Air Line Trail, open 365 days of the year.
Hill-Stead Museum is an incredible centre for the arts, hosting music, poetry and visual art festivals throughout the year, and with its own impressive collection of Impressionist masterpieces. It’s founder, Alfred Pope was among the earliest American collectors of French Impressionism, and his collection includes works by Degas, Monet and Manet. In Autumn you can walk through their annual Sculpture Trail and enjoy a number of classical musical performances.
The small town of Charlemont in Franklin County is a hub of outdoors action. A ski resort in winter, in Autumn you can go kayaking, zip-lining, white water rafting and hiking
Salem is of course famous for its 1692 witch trials, during which several locals were executed for allegedly practicing witchcraft. Landmarks from this episode include the Witch House, the former home of a trial judge, and the town is now home to the global headquarters of the Satanic Temple.
Just a few miles northwest of the city of Berlin in northern New Hampshire is one of the state’s newest additions to the state park system, Jericho Mountain State Park, which has around 100kms of trails made specifically for All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs).
With a backdrop of over 700,000 acres of White Mountain National Forest, North Conway boasts the tallest peak in the North East (Mt. Washington 6,288ft). Outdoor activities span all four seasons including some of the finest skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, golfing, fishing, canoeing, camping and leaf peeping in the entire country.
Milan Hill State Park is located ten miles north of Berlin near popular areas for hiking, picnicking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing. From this hilltop campground you can get a complete view of the mountain ranges in New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and Canada. The park has recently undergone an extensive renovation adding four yurts to the mix of accommodation options.
Lake Elmore, and Mt Elmore which rises steeply behind it, are part of Elmore State Park in Vermont. The folks of Elmore like to call Elmore the “Beauty Spot of Vermont”.
In the winter months Smuggler’s Notch is a popular family ski resort, but in Autumn it’s a great spot for hiking, mountain biking and zip-lining through the changing foliage.
