The poster image for the 1984 movie ‘Purple Rain,’ featuring Prince in arguably his most memorable look
Purple Rain’s soundtrack proved to be just as iconic as the film itself, winning Prince an Oscar in 1985 for Best Original Song Score, Best Soundtrack at the Brit awards, and a Grammy for Best Album Written for a Motion Picture or a Television Special. But besides the music, this image of Prince perched on a motorcycle in all his purple glory will remain forever etched in our memories. The look, which included a pair of pants with an asymmetric fly, a ruffled white shirt, and a long purple coat with chain mail on one shoulder, was created by Louis Well and Terry Vaughn, who also designed costumes for Earth, Wind and Fire.
Prince's style, like his music, was a fearless mix. His outlandish, androgynous fashion was totally unique and unbeholden to traditional views of masculinity. He was the sexiest man in pumps you’ve ever seen, and a rock star, composer, and lyricist like no other. He will be deeply missed by the world.
