Why is Father’s Day different in Australia?

Each year in Australia, Father’s Day is typically celebrated on the first Sunday of September – however it’s easy to get confused as this differs around the world.

In fact, you might have already had a mini freak-out this year when you saw some of your fave stars celebrating the occasion back in June.

That’s because in the US and UK, Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

In Australia, however, the date has been pushed back three months to break up the holiday calendar and give people some time to recover from the likes of Easter, Anzac Day, Mother’s Day and the Queen’s Birthday that run across April-June.

Not to mention Father’s Day, like most other anniversaries, is a commercialised holiday so having it coincide with the start of Spring works perfectly for marketers advertising common dad gifts like sporting, camping and boating items.

So really it’s as simple as September being more convenient for us Aussies.
