According to Charles Gerba Ph.D. at the University of Arizona, 90 per cent of mugs in offices are smeared with unwanted bacteria and over 20 per cent of them carry faecal matter.

Dr Gerba carried out a study on the matter and said that it’s all to do with how people wash their office mugs.

"Colonies of germs are living in your favorite cup," he told Men’s Health magazine.

He claims it’s all down to people cleaning their mugs with bacteria-laden sponges, which simply move the germs to the mug.

Rather disgustingly, Dr Gerba went on to say that the bacteria can last for up to three days.

To combat the amount of bacteria floating around in office kitchens, he recommends taking your coffee mug home with you and washing it in the dishwasher to make sure it’s clean.
