'The other Wiggles didn’t know' about Emma Watkins and Lachy Gillespie's split

Following their shock split last month, Wiggles star Emma Watkins has opened up about falling out of love with husband Lachy Gillespie.

The couple announced they had officially parted ways in August after a six-month trial separation, and speaking candidly to Australian Story on Monday night, 28-year-old Emma revealed that she and Lachy kept the news of their breakup to themselves for a long while.

“The other Wiggles didn’t know,” Emma said. “I don’t really think many people knew about it.”

“Lachy and I, we still really wanted to work on our relationship, and work through some things together.”

Originally wanting to keep their split quiet until the end of this year, Emma and Lachy had some quick-thinking to do when they got an unexpected call from the media.

“When the media first called, I think initially I thought, ‘Oh, no. They don’t really know what’s going on,’” Emma explained. “And then as the hours kept going by I kept getting more calls and I thought, ‘Oh, okay. I think people know more than we thought they did.’”

Despite remaining firm friends throughout their split, and insisting their break up happened “organically”, Emma confessed there has been a lot of “ups and downs” through the process.

Whilst going through the motions of ending their two year marriage, the pair had to see each other everyday for work.

“It’s not easy spending that much time together with the pressure of work, too,” Emma said.

However, she insisted their are still “best friends” and their split was simply down to a shift in their “situation”.

“We are not really cranky at each other, we just realised that our situation had changed… probably more from me, than from him,” Emma explained.

Despite not being a couple anymore, Emma is adamant the pair will remain in each other’s lives “for the rest of our life”.

At the beginning of August, Emma and Lachy admitted in a joint statement they had been “navigating through a trial separation” for the last six months.

They added that throughout their separation performing shows together has been a “source of joy” and embracing their split as “a very positive change in [their] relationship”.

In addition, they insisted “first and foremost [they] love and adore performing as Emma and Lachy in The Wiggles”.

Emma and Lachlan tied the knot two years ago in April 2016 in Bowral, New South Wales.

Earlier this year Emma was forced to pull out of the group’s tour because of her battle with endometriosis.

The star — who is the yellow Wiggle in the children’s entertainment group — revealed she needs surgery to treat the chronic illness as she has been suffering with a “lot of pain” the last few years.

“I have been in a lot of pain for the past couple of years,” she told The Daily Telegraph at the time, admitting the decision to have treatment had been “difficult”.
