It’s the whirlwind celebrity engagement that’s left Meghan Markle “very excited” for her bestie Priyanka Chopra and her new fiancé Nick Jonas.
With the actress and her beau of two months deciding to make it official – in the week they’re said to have visited Meghan and Prince Harry at their Oxfordshire home, no less – all signs point to the Duchess of Sussex standing by Priyanka’s side on her big day.
Meghan’s life is heavily dictated by royal do’s and don’t’s, leading to speculation whether the former Suits star will be able to act as bridesmaid if she’s asked.
And now a royal expert has weighed in on whether the Duchess of Sussex will be allowed to help her friend on her big day.

“There is no protocol that dictates whether an adult female member of the British Royal Family can take on the role of a bridesmaid or maid of honor at a non-royal’s wedding,” royal reporter Omid Scobie told cosmopolitan.com.
While there might not be any official protocol, there is one thing that would stand in the way of Meghan saying yes to being a bridesmaid.
“It is an unlikely scenario for one simple reason: A female royal would not be expected to walk behind a ‘commoner,’” Omid added.
Case in point: Kate Middleton had her sister Pippa act as bridesmaid during her 2011 wedding to Prince William. She wasn’t able to return the favour though, when Pippa wed James Matthews last year.
However there’s isn’t anything set in stone if Meghan does get the call up.
“Should a female member of the Royal Family choose to take on a bridal party role at a friend’s wedding, it would be her own decision,” Omid said.
“There’s no rule that wouldn’t allow this and she certainly wouldn’t need permission or guidance from Palace aides.”
