31-year-old woman reveals she got sterilised to save the planet

For some people, the thought of bringing a new human into a world that is already suffering from the impacts of climate change is a scary thought.

So much so, recycling consultant Gwynn MacKellen has decided to take measures into her own hands and get an irreversible sterilisation procedure to ensure she never has kids.

Speaking on This Morning this week, the 31-year-old revealed that by undergoing this procedure that blocks her reproductive tubes, she will be doing her bit for the environment in a bid to save the planet.

“There was a recent study by a university in Sweden that found that having one fewer child was more than 2000 times more impactful in terms of greenhouse gas reduction than recycling and 71 times more impactful than eating a plant-based diet,” she says.

“All of the other [environmental] choices that you can make are very, very small in comparison because once you create that person they have their own effects, and they may have offspring and they may have offspring. It’s really the impact of people.”

Gwynn revealed that it was in her early 20’s when she made the decision not to have kids, however, her first approach was to try and convince her previous partners to get vasectomies – only they refused.

So when her current partner said, “Well if it’s so important to you, why don’t you do it yourself? Why don’t you get sterilised?” Gwynn started looking into it.

And despite being of the young age of 26 at the time, she eventually found a doctor who was willing to go through with the procedure.

While Gwynn herself would feel bad to bring another person into the world, she does clarify that she does not judge the choices of others.
