Women reveal the worst snide remarks from their mothers-in-law

A woman has asked for advice on how to deal with a mother-in-law who has an uncanny knack of insulting her in a way that no-one else seems to notice.

Taking to parenting forum Mumsnet, she shared some shocking examples of what she has had to deal with from her husband’s mum, asking if anyone else has had a similar experience.

“When I put on weight recently and she kept saying ‘you look healthy’,” she wrote. “I knew it was a dig but I couldn’t say anything. I said it to my husband after and he thought she was just being nice.

“I thought it would be helpful to hear what other passive aggressive comments others have received from your in-laws.”

She ended with a shocker.

I’ll finish with one of her worst: when we first got engaged, she said ‘I was glad you didn’t put it in the paper in case it doesn’t work out’.”

Her request was quickly answered as other users flooded the forum with their own horror stories.

“Does this have a name or is it just chicken stew,” one person shared.

On my wedding day to her son, she asked me if I can get the photographer to do a family photo, so I come back with said photographer and she dismisses me,” another woman wrote. “So I’m standing there in my gown while she takes a family wedding photo with the whole wedding party minus the bride.”

“I never took the easy way out and gave mine a dummy,” another woman said of her in laws parenting tips.

One woman’s tale definitely wins the most awful award.

She shared a story of when her second son was born and her mother-in-law and sister-in-law came to visit the baby.

“They spent the entire afternoon sighing and saying that he was the ugliest baby she’d ever seen,” the woman wrote. “Just before leaving she stuck the knife in by adding ‘he definitely takes after your side’.

“On the next visit she changed it to ‘what does your postman look like?'”
