More women are turning to plastic surgery post break-up

Going through a break-up or a divorce can be either a difficult or liberating time depending on the circumstance.

But while divorce parties and the torching of wedding dresses seem very much the norm these days, there is another trend also on the rise.

Not only are women turning to cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery before their wedding day, there has also been an increase is both women and men seeking treatment post break-up, according to Dr Anh Nguyen, a plastic surgeon in WA.

However while there are many reasons people are taking this route, Dr Nguyen warns it isn’t always the answer.

“The physical transformations can and often do translate to so much more in terms of confidence and freedom from being self-conscious about things that once bothered them,” Dr Nguyen tells Be.

“But they are not the be-all and end-all, and cannot be relied upon as a solution to finding happiness.

“A person needs to find that themselves, but often how we see ourselves physically is very much linked to how we feel about ourselves.”

Dr Nguyen says women especially seek her out after a separation because their confidence “has taken a beating”.

“They believe that they have lost so much time in their life because they have devoted ‘the best years’ to their partner,” she tells us.

She also says it may be something they have been wanting to do for a while but their ex didn’t approve, or perhaps they are looking to re-enter the dating scene.

“People want to look and feel their best, particularly if the break up or divorce has taken a toll on their well-being,” she explains. “Many often feel it has aged them, and they have felt too comfortable in a relationship and have neglected themselves, and now feel they need to put themselves first.”

It might surprise you that this trend extends to men, but Dr Nguyen says she has seen plenty of male clients also wanting work after a separation.

“Men often come and want work done when they start seeing a younger woman and don’t want to look ‘old’ next to their partner,” she admits.

In terms of the most popular procedures, women most commonly want their breasts done after a break-up, while men are after anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers.
