How Dacre Montgomery handles Stranger Things fame

In case you haven't yet spent the weekend binge watching the second season of Stranger Things yet, you're the last to be introduced to Aussie actor Dacre Montgomery, who plays new Hawkins villain Billy Hargrove.

And while the 22-year-old was relatively unknown before the latest season of the Netflix hit, Dacre chatted with Be about how he dealt with his fear of losing his anonymity and the tips he picked up from his famous co-stars about the increasing attention.

"I was very scared about it, the loss of my anonymity initially," the Perth-born actor told Be while in Sydney promoting the new season.

"But then after Power Rangers came out I felt like I got over my fear a little bit. And now I think if somebody does come up to you in the right setting it’s a nice opportunity to interact with a fan because at the end of the day, if you’re green-lighting movies it’s because you have a fan base."

Dacre also recalled a night out with co-stars Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers) and Joe Keery (Steve Harrington) and seeing how his friends, who gained a massive following after appearing in the first season of the hit show, coped with being mobbed by a group of girls.

"I remember one night in Atlanta we went to a bar and Charlie and Joe and they were playing some arcade game and we just hear a scream from outside and we turn and one girl has noticed them and she runs in and I kid you not 15 girls ran in.

"They came in and they were crying 'oh my god', they all ran in and then they rang their mums and their mums came down to the bar and it was kind of like interesting to see how each individual deals with the loss of their anonymity and it was a really interesting thing to watch and I was kind of watching from the periphery, nobody knew who I was so it was kind of nice experiment."

The star also shared his nerves about being introduced to the Stranger Things fandom and how they would react to his character, "Billy the Bully".

"The Duffers wanted to play around with a human antagonist, and Billy envelopes past this bully to something far more sinister going on with that character but as the season goes on you get to taste more of Billy and what he has to offer in that realm," he said.

"But I think it’s fundamentally written with insecurity, kind of coming of age, journey to manhood, all these chemicals in a teenage body that… you know, I didn’t know who I was at that age so it’s an interesting thing. But it’ll be more interesting to see how it integrates with the fan and the fandom. That’s probably what I’m more nervous about because we are new to something that is so established.

Dacre went on, admitting that while he's still unsure how he'll be received, there's no doubt he'll find out quickly whether or not he's popular with the fandom.

"I honestly couldn’t say [how fans will react]. I’m excited, I feel like I was given a lot of space to put my own touch into the work, the Duffers are geniuses and I think the world that surrounds my character is so established so hopefully I integrates well. But I think we’ll find out, and I think the thing with these fans is you’ll find out in 12 hours because everyone just watches it."
