How to avoid wrinkles – without needles

While we all know wrinkles come part and parcel with ageing, it can still be a bit of a shock when you look in the mirror and notice another fine line making its mark on your face.

And, if like us, there’s no chance you would let a needle go anywhere near your face, then we’ve got you covered, because it turns out there are other ways to keep the wrinkles at bay.

Speaking to Be, cosmetic physician, Dr Nagd Farag said it’s all about starting the prevention early, through your diet and deep beauty treatments.

“You have to start early by looking after your health in general,” she said.

“Living healthy, eating a balanced and healthy diet, drinking enough water, managing your stress, sleeping enough, not drinking excessively and not smoking – all these things are essential to achieve a youthful appearance without needles.”

While Dr Farag says your lifestyle is a big factor in how you age throughout your life, she also claims that the sun can be blamed for nearly all the signs of ageing.

She recommends protecting yourself with a good sunscreen and making sure you’re covered from the harsh rays during the day.

And with advances in beauty devices, Dr Farag also champions the Pellevé  machine, which stimulates collagen production under the skin.

“It keeps building the collagen for a few weeks after the treatment,” she said.

“These treatments are not painful, they’re safe – there’s no needles.

“There is no downtime after. You’re not going to go out and have to hide for a few days because of the after-effects of the treatment.”

Dr Farag also revealed that the earlier you invest in keeping your skin in tip-top condition, the better.

“Ageing starts from the age of 25,” she said. “That’s the age the start to lose collagen.”

While she recognises that not everyone ages the same, she recommends starting to take preventative steps against it from your late 20s to early 30s.

“If you haven’t you can do mid 30s to late 30s and that’s fine,” she continued.

“Any time you feel you can start, then start to prevent. It has to be really suitable for your lifestyle.”

As for slathering your skin in over-the-counter anti-ageing creams, Dr Farag claims she doesn’t actually “think those creams do much”.

“Sometimes it’s not enough – you need to do other things,” she said.

“Some of the over-the-counter ones are good but I haven’t really done a comparative study.”
