Rihanna is not happy that this Snapchat filter makes her 'look white'

While plenty of celebrities are bordering on having a Snapchat addiction (looking at you Kardashian-Jenner family), Rihanna seems to be less than thrilled with the social media app.

Just a week after saying that she didn’t recognize herself in a Snapchat video because a filter warped her nose, Rihanna’s back to criticizing the app, but this time she’s saying that she can’t recognize her own reflection because the service lightened her skin so much.

“I look white,” the 28-year-old said in the snap, moving in and out of the shadows for a better look at herself. Clearly confused by her reflection, RiRi captioned the snap, “Mixed b—ches always in denial.” See the video for yourself above.

While it’s pretty well known that Snapchat’s various filters can be ultra-flattering on some people (we all know about that one flower crown filter that makes your skin glowier and eyes brighter), Rihanna points out an interesting fact about its effects. No matter what your skin color, it will whitewash your skin tone, making it possible to even appear as a completely different ethnicity.

According to a few Twitter users, not only does this filter make people look white even when they’re not, it can blur away freckles, slim the face, and give an all-around different appearance to the person using it. Some are even going as far to say that it’s become a form of body shaming since it gives you an impractical view of perfection.

“Mean Girls gave us unrealistic expectations about high school, and now that beautifying Snapchat filter does the same thing for our faces…,” said one Twitter commenter, with another saying, “Snapchat made those beautifying filters to make you hate yourself.”

While Snapchat’s filters were probably innocently intended for people to have fun altering their appearance, it’s clear that some filters have ultimately backfired. We’ve reached out to Snapchat for a comment on Rihanna’s claim and will update once we’ve heard back.
