In 2009 J.J. rebooted the franchise with his first offering Star Trek and starring Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu and Karl Urban as Dr Leonard McCoy.

Seven years later director Justin Lin has stepped on board to direct the latest offering Star Trek Beyond.

And, according to the cast, he's done a bang-up job.

"Justin did a great job coming in," John 'Hikaru Sulu' Cho told Be.

"We were already all established, but Justin did a great job coming in with a quiet energy, he was super confident, and took what J.J. had done and added his own thing".

John's character has already made some waves with fans after it was revealed he was in a same-sex relationship. A decision George Takei - the actor behind the original Sulu - has slammed.

George portrayed Sulu in the original 1960s TV series and has come out against the creative decision as, in his opinion, it goes against franchise creator Gene Roddenberry's vision.

The actor, who is openly homosexual and an LGBT rights activist, had said: "Unfortunately, it's a twisting of Gene's creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it's really unfortunate."

During Be's chat with the cast following the Australian premiere of the film, we learned that trying to control a group of very (very) tired actors can be near impossible.

But despite the noticeable fatigue, the boys managed to keep it together... well, barely.
