"You were an extraordinary person who gave inspiration to many Connie. The lives you will continue to touch, even though you’re gone, will be forever grateful to you and your relentless drive to make a difference. Thank you for being who you were. The world will miss you terribly, but heaven has scored a truly incredible angel," the Antoun family posted online.

"Connie, you beautiful soul. What you did, whilst you were sick was amazing. I hate this dreadful disease as it just takes the most beautiful people. RIP, beautiful lady xx," Bronnie Lehmann wrote.

Another person touched by the Johnson family named Rachael recalled a touching story writing: "Sam, I met you many moons ago at CanTeen. Your raw love and honesty has always shone through whatever life has thrown at you. I have lost my brother, two best friends and my Dad to various forms of cancer and my Mum is a breast cancer survivor at the gorgeous age of 84.

"Connie has been an inspiration, an amazing Village warrior and has maintained her dignity, integrity, love, honesty and passion for kicking Johnny Dancers a*#%. My heart goes out to her husband and boys, you and Hilde and the extended Village family."

Connie was first diagnosed with cancer as a child, undergoing treatments for bone cancer at age 11 only to then have a tumour found in her womb at 22, and most recently as breast and liver cancer.

The last stage of her diagnosis saw her given six months to live; she fought on for another seven years.

She endured a double mastectomy, radiaotherapy, chemotherapy and many other invasive and debilitating treatments, many while mothering her young boys, aged nine and 10.

Sam shared the news of his sister's death in an emotional Facebook post writing: "We lost Connie today. Or, as she asked me to say, she died of cancer today. It was so beautiful. We laughed, we cried, we sang stupid songs from our childhood to her, which she loved (mostly!). I read her so many village messages, which she relished. She went so richly, and with such grace. Trust me, she was genuinely cushioned by your love, till the end.

"Smart people helped me build a place for us villagers to share our confusement. Please leave your tributes there, so our family can keep them forever? www.loveforconnie.org. I'm sad and sorry to be the one to tell you this, yet at the same time, as the Chief Custodian of my sister’s legacy, I also feel extremely grateful and proud," he added.

"I'm off to cuddle the fam and warmly embrace an exquisite whisky, in memory of my sister, who did so bloody well, from start to finish. Thanks for everything, Connie Cottonsocks. It was my pleasure to be your Sammy Seal. Thank f**k for this village. See you on Connie's tribute wall we built. xsammy."
