Michael Hutchence's sister Tina discusses his brain injury

The sister of rock legend Michael Hutchence has opened up about the singer's brain injury ahead of the 20th anniversary since his death.

Tina Hutchence revealed to Nova's Fitzy & Wippa that in the last year before his death, the frontman had struggled.

"Michael had been in a pretty bad shape for over a year," she said. "He was on antidepressants and there were a number of things, really, not least of which was the traumatic brain injury he had received."

The rocker had been hurt in an incident with a taxi driver in 1992, who'd punched the singer causing him to fall to the pavement and fracture his skull while permanently losing his sense of taste and smell.

"In those days, in the '90s, nobody knew much about a TBI [traumatic brain injury]," she continued. "Now if somebody gets hit on the football field, they expel them right away. With large sound, a lot of people, crowded places, most people with a TBI cannot handle that. Well, that was Michael's business."

The One Thing singer died five years later, aged just 37.

He left behind his then 16-month-old daughter, Tiger Lily, who went on to be adopted by British musician, Bob Geldof, following her mum Paula Yates sudden death in late 2000.

Describing his final days in Australia before he died by suicide in his Sydney hotel room, Tina said her brother would regularly 'dissolve into tears' and that he'd been 'anxious.'

"That was so not Michael," she told the hosts. "The pressures around him were just too much; he really needed a break."

To mark the milestone of his tragic passing a two-part documentary The Last Rockstar, is premiering tonight on Seven at 7.30pm.
