Georgie Gardner to replace Lisa Wilkinson on Today

After weeks of speculation it has been confirmed Georgie Gardner will be taking up the empty seat alongside Karl Stefanovic on Today.

It comes after Lisa Wilkinson's shock exit from the network last month with reports the 57-year-old demanded the same pay as co-host Karl.

"Can I say I'm deeply honoured to take this on," Georgie said following the announcement on Thursday morning. "You know, there's no bigger, better gig in Australian TV."

The 46-year-old said she was thrilled with the "wonderful opportunity to hopefully reconnect with viewers in every corner of this country".

'It's most extraordinary opportunity," she gushed. "It's not lost on me."

Georgie also praised her predecessor Lisa.

"Of course, you know, big shoes to fill," she said. "I know acutely how much love and respect there has been for Lisa."

"She will always be part of the Today show landscape as will the women who went before her," Georgie continued. "It's an enormous role. I'm deeply grateful. Can't wait to get started."

Georgie is no stranger to Today.

She previously appeared on the Channel Nine breakfast show as the newsreader from 2007 to 2014.

Lisa opened up about the issue of the gender pay gap on Wednesday following her sudden departure from the network last month.

Speaking to news.com.au, the presenter spoke about women's frustrations to do with pay gaps and other issues.

"Women have had enough," she told the outlet. "The gender pay gap, domestic violence, homelessness is on a huge rise in this country, particularly for women over 50."

“There are already enough hurdles out there that we have to jump and forces against us that make the fact we are mere female more challenging,’’ Lisa added.

Lisa has reportedly scooped a $2 million dollar pay-packet in her new role with Ten on The Project.
