Reese Witherspoon sued over 'Gone Girl'
Reese Witherspoon may have produced box office hit Gone Girl, but the actress is now being sued over the 2014 film.
According to TMZ, writer Leslie Weller is suing the 41-year-old star, along with the flick's director David Fincher and the author of the book on which the movie was based Gillian Flynn, claiming they stole the story from a 2005 screenplay she wrote called Out of the Blue.
The outlet adds Weller reportedly sent a copy to a script consultant and from that someone was able to steal her work and alleges Gone Girl was taken from her screenplay.
Weller's claims also include that there are a number of similarities between Out of the Blue and Gone Girl, including being based around a couple's whose marriage is in trouble, and the central plot twist of the wife setting up her husband mirror each other.
TMZ adds that in Weller's case she says the novel and screenplay are "built in the same way" and goes on to say they both include "how everyone sympathizes with the wife, before beginning to hate the husband. But the plot turns and by the end, the husband and wife are both hated" and that her screenplay includes a scene with a hammer which leads the audience to believe the husband might hurt his wife, much like the movie does.
It's unclear how much the writer is suing Witherspoon for and the Big Little Lies star is yet to comment on the case.
Gone Girl starred Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris.
