Dramatic footage shows the 68-year-old singing at the front of the stage before staggering back slightly and falling to the ground.

Nearby musicians ran to his aid when they realised what had occurred, while one woman can be seen rolling the singer onto his side.

He was then rushed to hospital.

A number of audience members managed to capture the shocking moment on their mobile phones.

Witness Callie Young, 29, told NBC News the singer appeared "out of it" for most of the concert.

"I actually told my boyfriend I was having a hard time enjoying the concert because I was concerned for his health," she said.

Callie said Meat Loaf had been singing for about an hour when he took a short break and came back on to sing his hit I'd Do Anything For Love.

"Before the first chorus he just dropped," Young said. "We thought it was part of the show but it got very serious very quickly."

Many fans quickly took to Twitter to voice their concern about the singer's welfare.

Another tweeted a photo of the ambulance at the scene.

A spokesperson for Alberta Health Services confirmed that a patient was transported from the concert venue to an Edmonton hospital, but would not identify the patient or the patient's condition.

Earlier this week, the singer was forced to cancel his show in Calgary because of an illness, but no details were revealed at the time.
