Anthony Mundine walks out of I’m a Celeb
Hot off the heels of Bernard Tomic’s shock exit, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! has lost another of its most recognisable faces, with Anthony Mundine walking out.
After just two weeks in the African jungle, the former champion boxer has called it quits and packed up his things.
The 42-year-old took to Facebook early on Thursday morning to reveal that tonight’s show will be his last, and to share his motivations.
“It was an incredible experience but I miss my family and feel like I have accomplished everything I wanted to do,” he wrote in a short post.
“I did all but one of the trials (which I couldn’t compete in because of my foot) and met some great people and went out with a bang on an epic trial that you will see tonight.”
He concluded by thanking his supporters for watching the show, and promising to make a stunning exit, before signing off with the hashtag ‘it’s all gravy baby’.
According to news.com.au, Mundine's exit came just a matter of hours after he took part in a 'viper room' challenge alongside rival boxer Danny Green, with host Chris Brown suggesting that putting them head to head forced Mundine's hand.
“Viper Room seemed to push both Danny Green and Anthony Mundine to their limits,” Brown said.
“The expectation was that that trial would bring them closer together but it seems it may have been the straw that broke the man’s back.”
During his time on the show, Mundine also showed his softer side when he broke down while speaking about suicide.
Recounting a time he inadvertently saved a fan on the verge of suicide, Mundine said, "I saved this dude’s life. He was in a very bad, depressed state, right."
"His daughter walked in. She was going hysterical, saying, ‘Dad, what are you doing? What are you doing?’ He said, ‘I need to go, I need to do this.’
"And she goes, ‘Well, what about Anthony Mundine?’ Because he always told her that he always wanted to meet me before he died."
The dad agreed, and said he wouldn't go before he got the chance to meet Mundine, and when they did eventually come face to face, the boxer said he thought the dad had 'turned a corner'.
"He said, ‘Your courage, your strength, helped me out of this dark place.’ That touched me, man. I know I’m doing something — something right."
Not one to shy away from controversy, Mundine was also called out by fellow campmate and Real Housewives of Melbourne star Jackie Gillies for a'sexist' comment about women's clothing.
He said he doesn't think women should wear skirts above the knee, insisting it was to stop 'other men lusting over your women.'
Speaking about his wife Danielle, he said, "She can wear a dress... not a short skirt, not a above the knees," he said. "That is just the way I am, it is the way I feel, the way I think."
Mundine's departure comes a week after tennis star Bernard Tomic also exited the jungle prematurely.
The 25-year-old described his three-day stint on the show as 'a wake up call' which prompted him to return to tennis.
"I don't want to spend half my time depressed here and thinking about how I played the last year and where I should be," he said.
"I'm just depressed. I'm thinking I've never had time to think about my thoughts. I've always had people around. My life is fast paced and everything has slowed down the last three or four days."
