From stinging eyes to trying to handle a super sharp knife while squinting through a flood of tears, it’s like those pesky little onions are getting their own sweet revenge for being eaten.
While there’s lots of theories on how to stop your eyes from welling up, grocery delivery website Thrive Market has an ingenious way of stopping those tears from falling.
"Hold an ice cube in your mouth while chopping onions to keep your eyes from watering," they suggest. "Biting into a piece of bread also works for some people."
Why does it work?
“Some say that having something in your mouth encourages you to breathe through your mouth, sucking in the gasses from the onion that irritate your eyes,” they advise.
For those who want a scientific reason behind the tears, onions contain molecules called amino acid sulfoxides.
When you cut into it, enzymes mix to form a sulphur compound, which then reacts with the water in your eye and creates sulphuric acid – and results in the burn.
Science aside, we’re definitely going to be giving this tip a go the next time onions are on the menu.
