The real reason chip packets are so noisy

If you’ve ever tried sneaking a chip out of a packet without anyone noticing you’ll know that’s pretty much impossible.

The tell-tale rustle of a chip packet is hard to hide.

But it turns out that packets are noisy for a reason – and it all has to do with making the chips taste better.

According to scientists, chip manufacturers make the packaging noisy on purpose, because the chips taste fresher and crunchier if you also hear the rustle.

Charles Spence, a professor of experimental psychology at Oxford University, did a ‘sonic taste’ experiment, which proved as much.

In it, he got participants to eat chips while wearing headphones, so they couldn’t hear the crunch or rustle. And surprisingly, many of them ended up saying the chips tasted more stale and spongy.

So basically sound, as well as smell, plays a huge part in how much we enjoy our food.

“The sounds of the packaging in which a food is experienced — think the rattle of the crisps packet, or the pop of the champagne cork — can also influence our enjoyment of what comes next too,” he wrote.

“Whenever we hear the pop of the champagne cork, or the rattle of the crisp packet, certain expectations automatically come to mind.”

“There’s no reason in terms of product preservation for the noisy packets.”
