The humble avocado is the treat of choice for millennials everywhere.
But what if we told you that you’ve actually been eating avocados wrong this whole time? Or at least, not getting the very best out of them?
Turns out, if avocado on toast is one of your favourite things, you’ve probably been throwing out the part of the avocado that is actually best for you.
We all know the flesh of the fruit is jam-packed with vitamins, antioxidants, potassium, good fats, fibre, and all the healthy things you could ask for from a delicious treat.
But according to scientists, the seed husk is actually the part that is the ‘gold mine’.
At a recent meeting of the American Chemical Society, it was revealed that the seed husk – the outer coating of the stone – is full of medical compounds, which could ‘treat a whole host of debilitating diseases’.
“The medicinal compounds within them could eventually be used to treat cancer, heart disease and other conditions,” Dr Debasish Bandyopadhyay, from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, explains.
Might be time to add a sprinkle of seed husk to your smashed avo.
