This is the time of year you’re most likely to get divorced

If it seems like all of Hollywood is splitting up right now – it’s probably because it’s summer.

Yep, according to researchers at the University of Washington, August is prime separation time, with spikes in divorce proceedings reaching an all-time high at this point in the year.

If you reverse the hemispheres, it hypothetically means couples living in Australia have a higher chance of getting divorced in February.

The reasoning? According to doctoral candidate Brian Serafini, it’s the time of year when couples take stock of their relationship because the focus tends to be on holidays and family time.

"People tend to face the holidays with rising expectations, despite what disappointments they might have had in years past," Brines explained. "They represent periods in the year when there's the anticipation or the opportunity for a new beginning, a new start, something different, a transition into a new period of life. It's like an optimism cycle, in a sense.”

On the flipside, Brines also thinks winter holidays are prime separation time for the same reason, and that most divorces are finalised just before the kids go back to school.

While you can probably take the study with a grain of salt when it comes to Aussie couples, what is known is that the average divorce age is around 45 for men and 42 for women, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

So while it's impossible to pinpoint exactly when people will file for divorce, chances are, a midlife crisis could be the culprit.
