Drinking coffee every day could help 'fight off dementia'

Caffeine lovers rejoice as a new study has found that drinking your daily hot beverage could actually help prevent dementia.

The study, published in The Journals of Gerontology, took note of the caffeine consumption of 6,500 women aged between 65 and 80.

Interestingly, they found during their research (which is not conclusive) that older women who consumed coffee were less likely to experience memory impairment.

They also claim from their findings that women who drank 261 milligrams of caffeine (around three cups) a day had a 36 per cent lower chance of getting dementia.

"What is unique about this study is that we had an unprecedented opportunity to examine the relationships between caffeine intake and dementia incidence in a large and well-defined, prospectively studied cohort of women," lead author Ira Driscoll, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, told Medical News Today.

"While we can't make a direct link between higher caffeine consumption and lower incidence of cognitive impairment and dementia, with further study, we can better quantify its relationship with cognitive health outcomes," Ms Driscoll went on to tell the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Last year, a study also claimed that people who drink coffee actually live longer.

The US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health conducted a review of 20 studies last year and found that of the 970,000 people surveyed, those who drank the most coffee were 14 per cent less likely to die prematurely compared with those who drank the least.

Now we don't feel so bad about those three flat whites we slipped in yesterday.
