Fisherman films his own shark attack

A Texan man was filming himself spearfishing underwater in the Bahamas when a shark came out of nowhere and bit him on the face and leg.

Dentist Dr Steve Cutbirth was spearfishing with his son-in-law off Green Turtle Cay when the bull shark arose from the depths of the murky turquoise waters and rammed him in the nose with its head.

The 62-year-old had caught a hogfish, but Cutbirth told KWTX that he wasn’t the only predator going after the fish.

As he tried to surface, the six-foot bull shark came for Cutbirth, biting him in the face. "It felt like a truck hit me in the face," he said, “I could not imagine what it was because I was in the middle of the ocean."

Dazed and confused as to what had hit him, the restorative surgeon then saw a whole lot of teeth coming back for more and then realised it was in fact the killer fish.

"It ripped my mask off and you can see where it got me right in the nose and then perfect claw marks right on the mask," the brave man said.

But the horror didn’t stop there. The shark came back for Cutbirth’s leg. Luckily he managed to kick it in the head, paralysing the shark and giving himself the chance to rise to safety and hop on his boat.

"It almost felt like we were dancing," said Cutbirth of the incident, “We would separate and then, here we went again…”

Unfortunately there wasn’t anyone on the island with experience to treat his wounds, but luckily his surgical talents came in handy, talking a local nurse through the procedure.

30 stitches later, Cutbirth was good as new and even decided to continue his holiday.

Now that’s a story for the grandkids.
