Car sticker sparks row over road rules

A driver has taken it upon himself to remind fellow motorists of one of the most debated – and frustrating – road rules.

Spotted in western Sydney on Friday, the driver of the ute has set off an online debate with a giant sticker plastered on his rear window which reads "Keep left unless overtaking – yes you".

The Traffic and Highway Patrol Command - NSW Police Force Facebook page shared an image of his car with the hash tag "hadenough".

And people were quick to comment.

“Yep I've felt like getting the same. I'm not a pushy one but it is frustrating when they sit there under the speed limit,” one user commented.

“What gets me is when someone overtakes one car, but instead of moving back into the left lane, they drive up the right lane for the next kilometre, as they want to overtake the next car too!” another agreed.

But some people were quick to argue that the huge sticker was not appropriate.

“Just saying that sticker is rather large and could be obstructing his view, that’s a defect,” said one person online.

“I'm tipping he'd be one of the muppets who tailgates within 0.5 seconds while drivers ARE actually overtaking, giving them a dose of high beam,” another said frustrated.

The photo comes after a Sydney woman sparked a national outrage over a video she posted blasting NSW police for fining her when she was indeed in the wrong.

Lena Kasparian was fined $300 by NSW Police in April for driving too slowly in a right hand overtaking lane and not overtaking.

She was outraged and posted a video online which went viral.

In the video Lena said it was “absolutely disgusting” that she was pulled over for “not going fast enough in a 90 zone”.

“There's absolutely no sign telling me I have to take over to drive in the right lane,' she said in the scathing video, threatening to “expose and report” NSW Police.

She posted the rant on Facebook but later took it down after viewers pointed out the highway patrol officer was well within his rights to pull her over for the offence. She appeared to be unaware of the rule and continued to blast the officer.

For anyone who is still confused this is the rule: Keeping left. On single-lane roads, you must stay as close as practical to the left side of the road. On multi-lane roads, if the speed limit is more than 80km/h, or if the road has a 'keep left unless overtaking' sign, you must not drive in the right-hand lane unless you are: overtaking.

It’ s even covered in the Top 10 most misunderstood road rules booklet by Transport NSW.
