Poor Prince Charles fell firmly into the trap of the awkward greeting when he was spotted leaning in just a little too close to Queen Letizia at Clarence House.

With the Spanish queen and her husband King Felipe currently on a three-day state visit to the UK, the royals were pictured arriving for afternoon tea with Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Captured firmly in the grips – so to speak – of his cringeworthy embrace, Prince Charles was seen intently eyeballing the Spanish queen, while holding firmly onto her hand.

With the Duchess of Cornwall and King Felipe looking on in awkward bemusement, it’s not the first uncomfortable encounter this foursome have had.

It’s fair to say the British royal family aren’t known for their public displays of affection, so it was clumsiness all round during an earlier greeting when Charles and Camilla leaned in to give the Spanish king and queen kisses on the cheek and hands.

Watch all the amazingness above.
