Couple give their dog Magnus the best farewell

When this WA couple found out their greyhound Magnus had cancer they decided to help him tick of the most epic bucket list.

Kristan and Jason Norris adopted Magnus when he was four-years-old and he immediately became part of the family.

So they were devastated when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in February this year.

The couple had been talking about wanting to adopt a dog to give it a second chance at life, and when they saw a photo of Magnus pop up on a pet rescue Facebook page they just had to meet him.

“He just had the saddest eyes but he looked so beautiful,” Kristan tells Be.

“He immediately became our baby, we never thought of ourselves as dog owners, he was just part of our family.”

Sadly, earlier this year Kristan notice Magnus was limping, and although at first she didn’t think much of it.

After a course of antibiotics he looked to have improved but when he took a turn for the worse the vet diagnosed him with cancer.

“It was absolutely devastating, it was pretty much the worst news we could have gotten,” Kristan tells us.

“There were treatment options for osteosarcoma but we decided not to do them because they were pretty extreme and he was nine years old. But there was no cure and it spreads so quickly, it was awful.”

Instead, they decided they would make every last moment count and Jason came up with the idea for the bucket list.

The couple included things they knew Magnus would love – like eating sushi and swimming in the ocean. But they also wanted to bring joy to others by doing things like visiting the elderly and thanking a war veteran.

Kristan shared his list on Facebook and people were quick to jump in and help them achieve as much as they could.

“I honestly thought nothing would really ever happen with it, but then it really kicked off and offers just started flooding in from people,” Kristan says.

A lady invited Magnus to visit her father in a nursing home, one person offered to take him for a paddleboard and another took him for a joy ride in his mustang convertible. He even went through a drive-thru and devoured an entire burger.

The best surprise was when WA police got in touch and offered to let him ride along in one of their police cars – and their police boat!

“The stand-up paddle boarding was a real highlight as well, we put his bed on it because he had the sore leg and it was really great,” Kristan says.

“Ultimately he just wanted to have our company and the love, and oh my goodness he got gourmet meals, chips, and he loved his cheeseburger.”

Magnus, who had spent much of his life donating blood and fundraising, managed to complete everything on his list except become a mascot, before he sadly passed away in April, 8 weeks after he was diagnosed.

But Kristan says she and Jason will cherish the memories forever.

“We made the most of every single day we had with him, he was such a special boy,” she says.
