Teen scammed of $9K by ‘Sugar Daddy’ con man

She’d never had a serious boyfriend before, but fed up with meeting immature guys her own age, British woman Anna Ryan was determined to find someone a bit different.

But a fateful foray into an online dating site promising to match “beautiful, successful people” in “mutually beneficial relationships” saw the pretty brunette robbed of her savings and scammed by a notorious conman.

Anna was just 18 when a friend suggested she try a ‘Sugar Baby’ themed website, soon matching with a man named James Walsh.

A stock trader with a Lamborghini, a flat in the exclusive London suburb of Chelsea and pulling in a whopping $89 million a year pay packet, James seemed like the perfect catch.

After seven months of texting and chatting on the phone, Anna, now 21, nervously agreed to meet up with James for dinner, admitting she felt disappointed when he asked for a lift from the train station as his Lamborghini had a flat tyre.

“James paid for the meal in cash, flashing a gold Rolex on his wrist as he handed the money to our waiter,” she told the Sun.

The pair arranged to meet again, with Anna once again asked to pick James up from the station. Smitten Anna heard all the right things as James promised her a lavish holiday to Dubai.

It was then James slipped into conversation he was facing a court fine, with company troubles seeing his bank account frozen that left him struggling to pay.

Anna brushed off the request, however after spending the night together, James demeanor changed dramatically as Anna was driving him back to the station.

“He started shouting at me, calling me selfish and demanding I transfer him five grand immediately or he would jump off a cliff,” she told the Sun.

"I don’t have that kind of money," I cried as he snatched my bank card out of my purse and dialled the number for my bank.”

Anna later checked her bank balance and was horrified to discover it had been cleaned out of her $9000 savings.

She then put his number into google, and came to the crushing realisation that his name wasn’t James Walsh – instead he was a Manchester con man called
David Overton, and Anna was just the latest victim in a scam that saw him pretend to be a stockbroker to swindle young women.

Anna confessed the story to her mum, with David arrested. Along with eight other victims, the brunette testified against him in court, with the conman later pleading guilty and sentenced to 15 months in jail.
