Drinking this amount of alcohol per week could be damaging your fertility

A new study has revealed what really happens if you drink an excessive amount of alcohol while you're trying for a baby and it's a big eye-opener.

The British Medical Journal has released their findings from study they conducted from 1 June 2007 to 5 January 2016 to investigate to what extent alcohol consumption affects female fertility.

They studied 6120 female Danish residents, aged between 21-45 years, who were in a stable relationship with a male partner and were trying to conceive without using any fertility treatment.

Alcohol consumption was self-reported as beer (330 ml bottles), red or white wine (120 ml glasses), dessert wine (50 ml glasses), spirits (20 mL) and categorized in standard servings per week.

Interestingly, the study found that that women who consumed more than 14 units of alcohol per week, or two drinks per day, were 18% less likely to become pregnant.

However the research also concluded that those who consumed seven drinks or less per week are unaffected and "no appreciable difference in fecundability was observed by level of consumption of beer and wine".

Of the 6120 women who were surveyed, 4210, who had a median alcohol intake of 2.0 got pregnant during the follow-up.

However the study did note that: "The data did not distinguish between regular and binge drinking, which may be important if large amounts of alcohol are consumed during the fertile window."

The research also noted that because the fetus may be particularly vulnerable to alcohol during the first few weeks after conception, "it would seem prudent for women who are actively trying to become pregnant to abstain from alcohol during their fertile window until a pregnancy has been ruled out".
