Is this the best pick-up attempt to get a date?

He's not just Fitzy and Wippa's newsreader or a panellist for The Morning Show, FOX Sports, and the ABC - Matt de Groot is also Be's newest columnist. He'll be taking us on a deep dive into the world of dating... from a guy's perspective.

Men spend far too much time conjuring innovative ways to meet girls. We really do. But if a unique and innovate pick-up strategy is successful, it’s the stuff of legend. (If it isn’t, it’s generally still a great story)
This is the best pick-up approach I’ve heard of.

Now this is particularly high-risk, but where there is risk comes wonderful reward.

Here’s how it works:

First you take two mobile phones with you when you go out. Your main phone, and a backup.

Next you go to a bar and identify the girl you want to meet. I should add here you will need to be alone, and this method can only be used once a night, so, choose carefully, but rapidly.

More often than not she’ll be with friends, which is never an easy situation, but this method takes that out problem of the equation.

Once you’ve picked her, call someone from your backup phone, it doesn’t matter who, and start to have a conversation.

Make your way near then girl and continue the conversation (again, no one actually needs to be at the other end), but after a few moments become urgently distracted by something, preferably outside.

Here’s where this becomes genius.

In earshot of the girl, tell the person on the phone to ‘hold on,’ and urgently hand the phone to her asking if she can hold onto it for ‘just a second’. Be sure to make eye-contact to build a connection but leave no room for objection. It needs to be rapid and precise.

As soon as it’s in her hand make a bee-line for the door and leave the pub.

She now has your phone. Do nothing about it that night.

The next morning call the phone you’ve given her and apologies for the confusion arrange a time to meet up to get the phone off her.

Of course you are grateful for her keeping the phone safe and the hassle of meeting up, and it would only be fair if you were to buy her a coffee as a thank you. And the rest is up to you.

Pure, simple, creative, risky brilliance. You now have a direct way to contact her, you’ve cut yourself from the heard of filth that is ‘guys at the pub’, and you’ve got a unique story of how you met. And who doesn’t want that?!

Of course there are things that can go wrong. She can refuse to take the phone, she can hand it into the bar, she can simply keep it for herself and sell it on Gumtree; but that’s all part of the risk-reward of the chase.

If you were to believe the guy who told me about it, it has a remarkable success rate; I’ve tried it once and failed spectacularly, but still love everything about the plan.

I also accept that if guys spent as much time trying to do something worthwhile as we did meet girls, we’d have probably have landed on Jupiter by now – but that’s just not the way we are wired.
