'House of Cards' returns without Kevin Spacey
After weeks of speculation, Netflix has confirmed it will begin shooting the sixth and final season of House of Cards, without star Kevin Spacey.
Following a series of sexual misconduct allegations that were leveled at the 58-year-old actor in October, Netflix halted production of the hit show, with reports suggesting it would not return.
However Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos has confirmed the final eight-episode season will start production in early 2018, but will focus on Robin Wright’s character Claire Underwood, reports Deadline.
While the season will not feature Spacey, Sarandos says it will still "bring closure of the show for fans", as well as give work to "some 2,000 people in the Baltimore area whose livelihoods depend on the show" the outlet reports Sarandos told the UBS’s Global Media and Communications Conference in New York overnight.
House of Cards usually consists of 13 episode seasons, and while it was reported it would go back into production after Thanksgiving in late November, Deadline adds that scriptwriters were "reworking" the scripts, finding a way to cut of Spacey's Frank Underwood from the show.
After allegations of sexual misconduct were made against the Baby Driver actor, Netflix confirmed it would "not be involved with any further production of House of Cards that includes Kevin Spacey" but continued to work with production house Media Rights Capital during the hiatus to find a way to bring the series to a close.
Back in October actor and Broadway star Anthony Rapp came forward claiming Spacey had made sexual advances on him when he was just 14-years-old.
Rapp, who is now 46-years-old, told Buzzfeed News that Spacey invited him to his New York City apartment party back in 1986, when they were both working in Broadway shows.
Spacey would have been 26-years-old at the time and Rapp claims he drunkenly climbed on top of him in bed and “tried to seduce” him.
Offering a bizarre apology after the Buzzfeed report, Spacey came out as gay, with celebrities and Twitter users slamming the Oscar-winner's statement for trying to “deflect” from the allegations by revealing details about his sexuality.
In early November it was revealed Spacey was seeking treatment in the same rehab facility as Harvey Weinstein.
