Mum warns against Mini Eggs after daughter’s choking death

On mum has urged parents to think twice about what Easter treats to buy their children after claiming her young daughter tragically passed away after she choked on a mini egg.

Posting under the user name XGemx on British parenting forum Mums Advice, the mum said she decided to speak out in the lead-up to Easter so other parents don’t suffer the same heartbreak.

Claiming it’s been three years since her five-year-old daughter Sophie choked on the chocolate, the mum recounted her frantic attempts to save her.

“I was unable to dislodged it, even with back slaps and pushing up and under her ribs,” the mum wrote.

“I had done a first aid course only six months prior to this event so all the techniques to help a choking child were still fresh in my mind but it didn’t help.

“I watched the light slip away from my babies eyes, I tried in vain to save her.”

The mum has urged other parents to be vigilant when it comes to smaller eggs, and watch their children carefully.

“If just one person reads this and watches their toddler, child or teen extra close when eating these my daughter’s death will not be in vain,” she wrote.

The mum’s story struck a chord with others parents, who shared similar stories.

“My twin girls are 14 years old now [and] when they were 5 one of them choked on a mini egg,” wrote one user.

“For years after I could not let her have them. When I finally did they were cut in half and closely supervised. I’ve never forgotten it and even today when she has them I still have to remind her what happened all those years ago. So sorry for your loss.”

Cadbury have issued a statement, with a spokesperson revealing Australian Mini Eggs carry the same warning as their UK counterparts.

“We were saddened by this tragic event as the safety of our customers is of the upmost importance to us," the statement said.

"We ensure that all of our Cadbury Mini Eggs packaging very clearly carries the following warning: Choking Hazard: This product is Not suitable for children under 4.”
