Percem Akin, who posts tutorials on Instagram and Youtube, added the caption “Color and pain [sic]. My lovely black beauty transformation make up” to the image, along with other hashtags including #blackwoman and #sadmakeup.

The internet soon responded to the image, which shows Percem with a scarf, and what appears to be scars on her face, with the make-up artist inundated with complaints, prompting her to take the post down and make her account private.

Percem has since apologised for the post, saying she didn’t intend to write #slave, and had actually written #slayer – the title of the movie she was working on - but the word had been changed.

'This is just a movie character, and the movie [was] directed by some poor students in my country, Turkey,” she told the Daily Mail.

“We are not living in America or Africa, in my country finding any black model is so difficult, and they [directors] created a character.”
