Surgeon discovers 27 contact lenses lodged in woman's eye

A surgeon has made a startling discovery while undergoing routine surgery on a patient’s eyes.

Dr. Rupal Morjaria found 27 contact lenses lodged in the woman’s eye after the 67-year-old attended her day surgery to have a cataract removed.

The doctor said she discovered a “blueish mass” of 17 lenses “bound together by mucus” before finding a further 10 contact lenses when she examined her under the microscope.

In an article published to the British Medical Journal, Dr. Morjaria, a specialist trainee ophthalmologist, said the woman has been wearing disposable lenses for the past 35 years and had “no previous ocular complaints”.

“She has poorer vision in the right eye and deep set eyes, which might have contributed to the unusually large number of retained foreign bodies,” she wrote.

Speaking to Optometry Today, Dr. Morjaria said the operating surgeons had never seen anything like it in their lives before.

“It was such a large mass. All the 17 contact lenses were stuck together,” she said.

“We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while it was sitting there.”

She said the patient was “quite shocked” and thought the irritation was “just part of old age and dry eye”.

Dr. Morjaria wrote that this case highlights how important it is to monitor people who wear contact lenses on a regular basis.
