Outrage over diner's 'teen tax' for kids eating without parents

Most of us are happy to leave a little extra for good service, but one mum has been left fuming after her daughter was charged a mandatory tip after eating out with her friends.

Melissa Desch was outraged after her 11-year-old daughter Bella showed her a receipt after having a milkshake at New Jersey eatery Wayne Hills Diner.

With a gratuity of 90 cents added to Bella’s US$4.99 milkshake, Melissa has slammed the diner after her daughter unknowingly double-tipped.

“It’s not how much she paid, it’s the simple fact she didn’t have a choice,” Melissa told CBS New York.

“I got charged gratuity and my mother was there the same day and she didn’t,” Bella added.

When contacted for comment by CBS New York, the diner’s attorney claimed “management reserves the right to add 18 percent gratuity”.

He claims the restaurant had become frustrated with big groups of kids dining at the restaurant without leaving a tip, and implemented the charge.

However that's not good enough for Melissa, who insists the policy should apply to everyone - and not discriminate against children.
