What they don't tell you about the Oscars

The 2018 Academy Awards will celebrate another year of achievements in the film industry, but there's a lot that goes on behind-the-scenes at the Oscars that proves its not all glitz and glamour like we're led to believe.

We all know the Oscars are a massive deal in Hollywood, but did you know that some of the biggest stars in the biz have to pay their way in?

Nominees, major stars on the academy's radar and film execs will get an invite to the film industry's night of nights, but if you haven't been in a film for a while or not creating that buzz around tinsel town, you've actually got to fork up the big dollars to walk the Oscars red carpet.

During my recent trip to Los Angeles with Discover LA, all it took was a tour of the Dolby Theatre (where the Academy Awards are held), to learn plenty of famous stars spotted at the awards have actually had to pay more than $700 to get in.

What's more, the Academy keeps the bar tab very tight on the night.

After walking down the 152 metre red carpet and up the not-so-stiletto-friendly steps to the venue, attendees are treated to a generous flow of alcohol served by waiters.

But once they go inside and take their seats, they have to pay for their own drinks, whether they're famous or not.

And what happens when nature calls? Let me tell you, the struggle is real.

I was astounded to learn just how far the restrooms are from the actual theatre. It's a real trek and no easy feat in a pair of heels.

While the likes of JLaw and Meryl Streep go about their business and powder their noses, seat fillers are immediately brought in to take their place in the meantime.

Speaking of seat fillers, their jobs are not to be underestimated on Oscars night.

During a commercial break, show organisers will often move nominees closer to the stage in case of a win, and seat fillers will do their thing and make themselves comfy in the empty chairs.

With a capacity of 3400, the Dolby Theatre will have the biggest names in Hollywood on Oscars night, and plenty of drama is bound to unfold.
