'For the Love of Spock' pays homage to Leonard Nimoy

Star Trek and Spock have been synonymous throughout the franchise’s history, with the pointy-eared, logic-minded Vulcan instantly emerging as the most popular crew member aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise when the show debuted 50 years ago.

That exalted status both tickled — and at times irritated — Spock’s alter ego, Leonard Nimoy, a journeyman actor who fell into a role that defined the rest of his life.

Nimoy’s complex, charged history with Spock is chronicled in the new documentary For the Love of Spock, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and will be opening in theatres on Sept. 9, one day after the anniversary of the Sept. 8, 1966 premiere of the first-ever Star Trek episode.

Directed by Nimoy’s son, Adam, the film features new interviews with the men and women who stood alongside him on the Enterprise bridge, including William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols. Watch the trailer above and see the poster below.

In April, Adam Nimoy talked to Yahoo Movies about his famous father, with whom he wasn’t always on the best of terms. He also played down reports of the strained off-screen relationship between Nimoy and Shatner and sung the praises of Zachary Quinto, who currently wears the pointy Vulcan ears in the revived film franchise.
